ROMKES RULES
The final round of the 2018 season saw a few surprises plus some light showers. The surprises included multiple race exclusions resulting from Scrutineering activities.
Nothing could stop Reuben Romkes though. .Three wins gave him victory for the day and the IPC O3L CAMS State Championship. His rivals for the Championship fell by the wayside, one as a result of scrutineering activity, the other with mechanical woes.
It was good to see Sean Ferrall back out on track after a lengthy abstinence. He shared Ducky’s re-engined (2.4L) Civic Tyre R in the U3L Class.
Qualifying
Nik Mitic, in the BMW, pipped Romkes’s Monaro by 3/100ths of a second for Pole Position followed home by Dom Comiglio in the Evo V11.
Race 1
A big black cloud must be following Comiglio. He blew yet another engine. This is the second failure this year and thought to be the same problem. There will be some serious head scratching in that team during the off-season. Nigel Wilson and Glen Melling also DNF’d.
Mitic beat Romkes to the chequered Flag, only to be excluded (along with Wayne Chrystal and Brad Wheeler) from Race 1 for ride height infractions. Race 1 to Romkes.
Tim Riley’s new Pace Motorsport built engine proved strong, putting the little U1,600 on the 2L pace. Problem was, it was getting hot and Timbo had to back-off.
Race 2
Glen Melling, who had DNF’d Race 1 was diverted into Scrutineering. He too failed the ride height test and was excluded. Mitic was a DNS.
This left a clear path for Romkes followed by Nigel Wilson’s Commodore and Garry Edwards U3L BMW.
Race 3
Apart from Romkes on Pole, the grid for Race 3 was quite unusual, with many smaller cars at the pointy end including Garry Edwards on P2 and Ron Coote’s Escort in P4. Rachel Beers was having a good day starting P3 in her Commodore.
Romkes streaked away to another win. Glen Melling started Rear of Grid after an awful start to the day, and after a hard charge, he was rewarded with 2nd Place. Nigel Wilson passed the chequered flag 3rd.
The Day
Romkes owned the day, but a very consistent Rachel Beers ended up 2nd overall, followed by Nigel Wilson.
The CAMS State Championship winners are:
O3L Reuben Romkes
U3L Garry Edwards
U2L Ron Coote
U1600 Tim Riley
